Morocco is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after travel destinations in 2026. With new direct flights from the US to Casablanca and Marrakech, it’s easier than ever to explore this diverse country. Morocco offers a rich blend of history, culture, landscapes, and cuisine, but its vastness means careful planning is key to making the most of your visit. Whether you have a few days or several weeks, this guide will help you design an itinerary that fits your interests and time.
Choosing Your Entry Point and Base
Most travelers arrive in Morocco through Casablanca or Marrakech. Casablanca is the country’s commercial hub but offers limited tourist attractions compared to other cities. If your trip is short, plan to spend no more than one day here. Marrakech, on the other hand, is vibrant and packed with sights, making it an excellent base for shorter stays.
For longer trips, consider splitting your time between Marrakech and other regions like Fes, the Atlas Mountains, or the coast. Each area offers a distinct experience, from ancient medinas to mountain villages and seaside towns.

Sample Itineraries Based on Trip Length
Trips of 4 Days or Less
Focus your time on Marrakech. The city’s medina, palaces, gardens, and bustling markets provide plenty to explore. You can visit the Koutoubia Mosque, Saadian Tombs, and Majorelle Garden. If you fly into Casablanca, spend only a day there before heading to Marrakech.
Trips of 5 to 6 Days
You have two main options:
Option 1: Spend 3 days in Marrakech, then 2 days in the Atlas Mountains. This is ideal if you enjoy hiking and want to visit traditional Berber villages.
Option 2: Spend 3 days in Marrakech, then 2 days in Essaouira, a charming coastal town known for its relaxed vibe, seafood, and historic ramparts.
Trips of 6 to 8 Days
With more time, you can add Fes to your itinerary:
Spend 3 days in Marrakech.
Spend 2 to 3 days in Fes, exploring its medieval medina, tanneries, and artisan workshops.
Consider a day trip to Volubilis, the well-preserved Roman ruins nearby.
Optionally, take an overnight trip to Chefchaouen, the famous blue city nestled in the Rif Mountains.
Trips of 10 Days or More
For a comprehensive experience, plan a loop that includes:
Marrakech - visit palaces, royal tombs, gardens and souks
Fes - visit medieval medina, tanneries, artisan workshops, and the world's oldest university
The Atlas Mountains - stunning scenery and Amazigh (Berber) villages
An overnight stay in the Sahara Desert - ride a camel, climb dunes
Essaouira on the Atlantic coast - walk along the city walls, visit art galleries and fishing port
Budgeting Your Trip
Costs vary widely depending on your travel style and budget. A travel advisor can help you sort out your options.
Customized private trips typically cost between $450 and $500 per day. This includes transportation, accommodations, tours, and logistics tailored to your preferences.
Small group tours offer a more affordable way to see the country, starting around $250 per day. These tours often include accommodations, some meals, and guided excursions.
If you plan a short stay using Marrakech as your base, budget accommodations and meals can keep costs lower. Conversely, Marrakech also offers five star accommodations that rival anything you can find in Europe.

Tips for Planning Your Itinerary
Prioritize your interests. Morocco offers history, nature, adventure, and beach experiences. Decide what excites you most.
Consider travel times. Distances can be long, and road conditions vary. Plan realistic travel days to avoid rushing. Traveling by rental car is not recommended.
Book accommodations early. Popular cities like Marrakech and Fes fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons.
Spring and fall are best times to visit. Summer is very hot and winter is cold at night. Many people assume that Morocco is a warm climate and don’t bring proper attire when visiting in the winter.
If you want to travel to the Sahara and stay overnight in a camp, don’t go in the winter. Drive time to the Sahara is long and cannot be done in one day from Marrakech. You’ll need to plan a longer itinerary to make the travel time worthwhile.
Marrakech is a safe destination for solo travelers. While I traveled solo to Morocco, I spent most of my time on a small group tour and then spent a few extra days in Marrakech after the tour ended. I was perfectly comfortable walking by myself and taking cabs to various places.
