Meteora stands out as one of Greece’s most extraordinary destinations. When to Visit Meteora

The best time to visit Meteora is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. These times are quieter, allowing you to soak in the atmosphere without the crowds. The soft light during these hours also enhances the dramatic scenery, perfect for photography or peaceful reflection.

How to Plan Your Stay

Avoid trying to fit Meteora into a day trip from Athens. The drive alone takes about four hours one way, which leaves little time to explore. Instead, plan to stay at least two nights in the area. This gives you time to visit the monasteries and explore the town of Kalambaka. Extend your stay if you want to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or rock climbing.

Delphi is a 2.5-hour drive from Athens, making it possible for a day trip. However, staying overnight allows you to explore the site at a relaxed pace and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. The nearby town of Delphi offers an assortment of family-owned hotels and restaurants. You can easily walk to the museum and the ancient site from the town. If you stay overnight, it’s worth it to request or pay extra for a room with a view.  If driving, be sure to ask about parking availability before booking your hotel.    

Nafplio: A Seaside Beauty

Once the capital of Greece until Athens took over in 1834, Nafplio is a gorgeous seaside town in the Peloponnese with a laid-back vibe. 

What to See in Nafplio

You can stroll around the old town and visit two historic sites: Palamidi Fortress and Bourtzi Castle. One is perched on the top of a cliff; the other is in the middle of the harbor, just a short boat ride away. From Nafplio, you can take a short drive to ancient Mycenae and Epidaurus. You can also arrange for a sailing cruise, wine tasting, food tour or cooking class.

This charming town is less than 2 hours drive from Athens, so it’s possible to make it a day trip but I would recommend two nights there.  You can choose from a wide range of budget friendly to high end accommodations. There are an abundance of restaurants and gelato shops.

Practical Tips for Traveling in Mainland Greece

• Transportation: Renting a car is the most flexible way to explore mainland Greece. Public transport options exist but may limit your schedule.

• Timing: Spring (April - May) and autumn (September - October) offer pleasant weather and fewer tourists compared to summer.

• Local Cuisine: Try regional dishes such as lamb with herbs in Meteora or fresh sea bream in Nafplio. Greeks are sticklers for fresh fish and I was surprised that many of them advised me not to order seafood when in Meteora, Delphi and Athens.

• Packing: Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and layers for cooler evenings in mountainous areas.

• Respect Local Customs: When visiting monasteries, dress modestly and follow visitor rules.

  
  

Final Thoughts

Athens does not make my top three list but I encourage you to see the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. I also recommend the Greek Agora, Temple of Hephaestus and the National Archeological Museum.  However, if your time is limited, focus on the three unique destinations outlined here and limit the number of days spent in Athens. Meteora, Delphi and Nafplio provide a rich mix of history, culture, and natural beauty that rewards travelers who take the time to explore it thoughtfully. Allow enough time to immerse yourself, and you will not be disappointed.
